Ape Quake needed decent music to get past the woeful traumatizing effort from Johnny Gamboa. Frances Charlotte's debut EP, Emerald, began my road to recovery.
Emerald is beautiful music that bleeds. Frances' sound is not groundbreaking – it combines the ethereal magic of 4 AD-era Cocteau Twins with the dark melodies and inflections of early Mazzy Star. Although some songs haunt a little more than others, every one approaches the listener from the same mystical perspective. "Silver" plays as the most immediate and resonating cut; it's addictive, manipulative and wonderful.
Frances Charlotte bursts talent as a singer-songwriter. The template provided in her debut is a solid one, but would like to see it stem into something with a little more arrangement creativity. Regardless, Emerald is an intensely enjoyable recording.
