Germany greets Ape Quake … again. For years, I’ve been stereo-whipped with Sprocket wannabes and pathetic crooners with an accent more blatant than Borat’s. When the Bucket Boys greeted me, I railed them with my jackass; before they came to, Hunter’s beast escorted them to my basement. My assumption was that they would find an exit and escape. All was good on Quake’s trail until one month later … the grimly expressionless quartet of Michael Lange (vocals), Joe Vander (drums), Helge Lange (guitar) and Andreas Kehren (bass) reappeared. Drat!
Resigned, Sunset Bar won rotation play. The CD needed an objective ear. God only knows what in the Anton Chigurh (watch out … a No Country for Old Men reference) would happen if they had to come a 3rd time. I’m outmanned … my fate is sealed.
The 1st couple notes of brooding coolness air-pumped forgetfulness of my potential fate – death may approach, but it’s alright. After 30 seconds, Michael’s faint accent slips from recognition. As songs pass, the dark lyrics, unplugged and non-gimmicky mojo proved that the Bucket Boys are a transatlantic talent.
All six tracks marvel with gritty texture, creativity and potency, but “Killer” and “Road to Perdition” mainline eminence.
