Fresh from my sunny tour from Still (a BoDean timeshare), Ape .: Quake needs a good bathing in a dark, youthful and invigorating pool. Do You See the Dark’s eponymous EP is prescribed to remove the pop residue that has begun to take hold.
The NYC band is theatrical, edgy and tight. Cakes (vocalist and bassist) vocal approach recalls the tone Gwen Stefani related on No Doubt’s Return to Saturn – except Cakes snags her moodiness and bashes it with a jackhammer. Cro (guitarist) angrily stabs with his instrument; he uncomfortably tinkers with timing when riffs need a jolt of an adrenalin pick. To soothe the aural beast, the outfit leans heavily Bino’s rhythmic ability on the skins.
Do You See the Dark is a bitter chocolate confection manipulated to delectable perfection. The act differentiates itself from other artists that share the female-led nu rock. Unlike groups intending to be the new Evanescence, Do You See the Dark opts for tuneful and dense compositions with a sonic signature that forges.
